Archeology
Numerous institutions in Strasbourg allow archeologists to study the Middle Ages.
It must be said that Alsace is a castle region, but there are also many churches and medieval villages. Some of these towns were already booming during the Late Middle Ages.
Amongst the main archeological organizations that are active in Alsace are the INRAP and the PAIR.
- The INRAP (National Institute of Preventive Archological Research / Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives) is a public research organization, specifically in charge of preventative archeological digs. They are the major conductor of this type of dig in France.
- The PAIR (Interdepartementale Rhine Region Archeological Center /Pôle d'Archéologie Interdépartemental Rhénan) is also a public organization, but was established by the French départements of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin.
These two organizations, amongst others, work on various sites – many of which belong to the medieval period.
